Shopify vs WooCommerce in Estonia — an honest comparison for merchants

WooCommerce runs roughly every fourth Estonian online store; Shopify only about three percent. Why compare at all? Because the sticker price and the three-year cost are two different things — an honest look at cost, security, speed and Estonian payments.

Shopify vs WooCommerce in Estonia — an honest comparison for merchants

Let's open with the most honest sentence a Shopify agency can write: WooCommerce is the undisputed leader of Estonian e-commerce. According to data from the Estonian E-commerce Association (E-kaubanduse Liit), roughly 26% of Estonian online stores run on WooCommerce, while Shopify sits at around 3%. If you simply want the platform most Estonian merchants use, you have your answer and can stop reading. If you want the platform that will cost you the least money and stress over the next three years, the picture gets more interesting — popularity and fit are not the same thing.

Where WooCommerce genuinely wins

WooCommerce's dominance here is no accident. The plugin itself is free and gives you full control: your server, your code, your data. The extension ecosystem is enormous, and almost every Estonian web agency has WordPress experience, so help is easy to find at a reasonable rate. If you already run a content-heavy WordPress site, adding a store to the same environment is a logical step. And for a small shop run by a technically confident owner who enjoys tinkering, WooCommerce can genuinely be the cheapest option on the table.

What the price tag hides

A free plugin still needs paid machinery around it. Decent hosting costs €10–30 a month, premium extensions — filters, multilingual support, instalments — add tens of euros more, and someone has to own updates, backups and plugin conflicts. If that someone bills by the hour, the real monthly cost overtakes a Shopify subscription surprisingly fast. Shopify Basic costs about €27 a month billed annually, with hosting, SSL, updates and round-the-clock support included. The fair comparison is not the first month's invoice but the total cost of ownership over three years, maintenance hours included.

Security and updates

This is where the two philosophies differ most sharply. On WooCommerce, you are responsible: WordPress core, the theme and every plugin need regular updates, and any update can break something. An outdated plugin is also the most common way stores get hacked. On Shopify, the platform does that work — security patches, PCI compliance and backups happen automatically, without the merchant ever noticing. That is not a technical footnote; it is a recurring block of hours that either sits in your calendar or doesn't.

Speed and scaling

WooCommerce speed depends on hosting and tuning: a well-maintained store is fast, a neglected one gets slower every year. Shopify runs on a global CDN and absorbs campaign-day traffic spikes without you upgrading a server plan. If a TV spot or a Black Friday push is in your plans, that difference shows up in revenue, not just in seconds.

Estonian payments and shipping: essentially a draw

Good news: the local infrastructure works on both platforms. Montonio and Maksekeskus offer Estonian bank links for WooCommerce and Shopify alike, and Omniva, SmartPost and DPD parcel machines integrate with both. There is also a fresh fact older comparisons miss: Shopify Payments is now available in Estonia, which removed Shopify's biggest historical weakness in this market. We break the options down in our comparison of Estonian payment gateways.

Side by side

Share of Estonian stores around 26% around 3%, growing

So which one is yours?

Pick WooCommerce if you already have a strong WordPress site and someone on the team who actually enjoys updates and backups; if you need a very specific custom behaviour that an existing plugin already solves; or if you are starting so small that every euro of monthly fees matters and your own time is cheaper than a subscription.

Pick Shopify if you want to spend your week on selling rather than server care; if the store is your core business and every hour of downtime costs money; or if your plans reach beyond Estonia. A fixed subscription, automatic security and a checkout that simply works are the price of sleeping well.

And if you are on WooCommerce today with maintenance eating more time than marketing, you don't have to start from zero: our Shopify migration service moves products, customers and order history and sets up redirects so your Google rankings survive the move.
